What's the story of Sweetcheeks?
In July 2009 Catherine decided to set up Sweetcheeks. As a coeliac she was often disappointed with the lack of fresh baked treats available. Her 21st Birthday lacked a birthday cake and she was envious of all the cupcakes on offer for non Coeliacs. It seemed to be a similar story for Vegans. And so she launched Sweetcheeks.
Catherine used her passion for food and baking to develop stunning cakes that taste even better than normal cakes.
Where is Sweetcheeks based?
Sweetcheeks kitchens are located in Kings Langley, Hertfordshire, where we hand make and decorate all our cakes with lots of TLC!
What is Gluten Free?
A gluten-free diet is essential for people who have coeliac disease, chrons disease or dermatitis herpetiformis, however other people choose to follow a gluten free diet by choice as it is a healthier option. Gluten is a complex protein and difficult for some to digest. It is found in foods derived from gluten-containing cereals such as wheat, barley and rye. Oats are an iffy one as you can get gluten free oats but these must be specially sourced as most oats are contaminated by gluten due to farming procedures. Sweetcheeks makes cupcakes which are baked using certified gluten free ingredients. They taste and feel the same as normal cupcakes but you have the assurance that you can serve them to anyone and they will be able to enjoy them.
What is Vegan?
Veganism is a type of vegetarian diet that excludes meat, eggs, dairy products and all other animal-derived ingredients. This means that cakes cannot be baked using eggs and butter. Sweetcheeks has spent a long time developing recipes that ensure that our Vegan cupcakes are tasty and satisfying without using any animal derived products or any gluten.
Sweetcheeks is now also proud to say that we are Registered with the Vegan Society!
What do you actually make your cakes with?
One of the questions we get asked most frequently is: how do you manage to make your cakes? and what do you actually use to make them? Well, after spending 6 months experimeting with different flours and ingredients before beginning trading, we have found that different blends of gram, rice, potato, coconut and quinoa flours (among other gluten free flours) are best for different flavours. The exact blends are our secret.
We do not substitute the lack of egg/dairy/wheat etc in our cakes with synthetic products; instead we use natural alternatives which are healthier for you.
In 2012 Sweetcheeks also pledged to reduce the amount of sugar we use in our products (even though it is unrefined raw cane sugar) and to completely cut out artificial colourings and flavourings.
How many calories are in your cupcakes and other goodies?
Although Sweetcheeks does not advocate calorie counting (as all Sweetcheeks products are a yummy treat!) we can tell you that our cupcakes contain around 150 calories each. This does vary depending on whether you have a Gluten Free cupcake or a Gluten Free Vegan cupcake and also on what the frosting is.
Where do you deliver to?
